One (1) Simple Practice to Prevent Perineal Tears During Childbirth.

Most women who pass through v*ginal delivery is at risk of having a perineal tear. Perineal tear during childbirth can be classified into 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th degree tear,depending on the extension and the muscles affected.The most severe form is 4th degree tear which can go as far as creating an opening from the v*gina down to the anal canal.

Risk of perineal tear can be reduced by perineal massage during pregnancy.

PERINEAL MASSAGE: is a slight and gentle massage on the perineum around the vagina and anal opening which is done 4-6weeks to delivery.

This massage is done to help widen and smoothen the muscles of the perineum and aid elasticity when pressure is applied to this area during delivery.

PERINEAL MASSAGE is done as from 34-35weeks of pregnancy.

How To Carry out a Perineal Massage.

  • Firstly, take a warm bath using a towel to gently clean the perineal area,that is the area between the opening of the v**gina and the an*us.
  • Make sure your finger nails are cut and short.
  • Adopt a comfortable position either by lying down or squatting.
  • Lubricate your finger using Olive oil,Vaseline or any lubricant that are not harmful to the skin.
  • Gently massage the area in a random motion for 1-2minutes
  • Repeat the procedure daily or anytime you found fit.
  • Your partner can help carry out this perineal massage if you don’t feel comfortable touching yourself.

Perineal massage helps reduce the risk of perineal tear during childbirth and can be done routinely towards the last week of pregnancy.
